  43. I  recently downloaded from a.a something called ECOLOGY.LZH,
  44. and unlzh'ed it, giving:

  53. Once installed on the 1040, I ran ECO.PRG :
  54. a nice panel with quotation from Ch. Darwin
  55. appears, together with a joyful music.

  57. After some minutes have passed, nothing else happens but
  58. the music which continues...

  60. I tried mouse buttons and keyboard keys
  61. (with or without Ctl / Shft / Alt)
  62. and still nothing new...
  63.  
  64. Has anybody tried this program out and got an idea
  65. about making it go further ?

  135. Several different 'detex' programs exist, if you don't wan't to go through the
  136. trouble of setting up TeX/LaTeX.
  137.  
  138. I have one for emacs (called detex.el) that I can mail to anyone interested.
  139. It should also be avaible on major emacs-lisp ftp-sites.  I haven't tried it
  140. though, so I don't know how good it is. One probably looses a lot of structure
  141. (chapters, sections, headings and such) in the process, I guess.

  222. I retrieved music/musedt.lzh from atari.archive last night and tried
  223. to convert it to an arc before downloading it, but lharc aborted with
  224. CRC errors?  Does anyone know if the .lzh is corrupted?  Or is this
  225. just another in the long line of lharc version incompatibility
  226. problems?  If the latter, does anyone know which version of lharc
  227. might extract the sucker?  (I'm using "C-LHarc for UNIX Version 1.00.1
  228. (C) 1989-1990 Y.Tagawa, Kai Uwe Rommel".  Is there a more recent
  229. version for unix systems?)

  251. The last weeks several people having the same trouble with their
  252. new MEGA STE has asked me how we fixed mine, and I hope this file
  253. can help you fix it.  It's really the best machine Atari has made
  254. so it would be terrible not to have it in perfect condition :-)

  256. Errors on DMA-sound and video on MEGA STE - HOW WE FIXED IT !

  258. Here's a summary of what we found at service in Norway.
  259. First - the errors on both machines we discovered were:
  260.  
  261. - Static/noise on DMA sound and MIXed standard ST sound.
  262. - Sync-problems when using Spectrum512 pictures (vertical bars).
  263. - Vertical flickering bars on monochrome (most at 8 MHz).
  264. - Right edge of monochrome screen "flips" over to left edge
  265.   when changing screen adress/resolution in mono-mode.
  266.  
  267. We tried to find a chip that could be the cause of all these
  268. problems and found a big VLSI chip partly hidden under the right
  269. edge of the VME-card holder. It's chip U502 on my MEGA STE and
  270. is called GSTSHIFTER on the print-layout.  After looking at the
  271. print-layout on both MEGA STE and standard STE we found the same
  272. chip on standard STE, a combined sound/video chip but with a totally
  273. different part-number.  Anyway, we removed the original MEGA STE
  274. chip (made in 1990) and replaced in with the STE chip (from 1989)
  275. and all the problems were gone.  If you want to "steal" a chip from
  276. a standard STE it's chip U401 inside the STE (still GSTSHIFTER).
  277.  
  278. Disclaimer:  Even though this solved the problems for us it might not
  279.              work for all MEGA STE's and you do this at your own risk
  280.

  282.  this.  It's not "ONLY YOUR MACHINE" anymore.  It's quite a few...)

  353.         Well about a month ago,I posted a request for information about using
  354. the MV16 sound cartridge,what comes with BAT,for playing samples.I receive
  355. little response,unfortunately apart from Dave Lockwood <thanks Dave>.So I
  356. imagine,that not many people out there know how to use it,so after some work
  357. ,I have finally worked out how to use it <I think>.
  358.  
  359.         So what follows is a describtion of how to play samples through the
  360. MV16 sound cartridge,which gives 16-channels of mono 8-bit sound!
  361.

  364. The first thing that must be understood is that,because the MV16 plugs into the
  365. cartridge port then it is not possible to write data directly to it along the
  366. data bus.This is due to the MMU or GLUE,which has this area $FA0000 to $FBFFFF
  367. marked as read-only.So what is needed is to find the way in which the volume
  368. and channel data is passed to the cartridge.
  369.  
  370. Now as Dave,rightly pointed out,this is simply done by using the address lines.
  371. So to send some data to the cartridge port,you simply place the data as the
  372. lower 1->15 bits of an address in the range $FA0000 to $FBFFFF and then when
  373. you read this address,those lines are setup correctly.
  374.  
  375. NOTE:- That the cartridge port is Word addressed and so even though the address
  376. may be described as bits 0->23,the zero bit is not used in the cartridge port
  377. ,so that even addresses are always used! And the higher bit`s describe the
  378. cartridge port area of 128k at $FA0000.So this gives us the bits 1->15 thru
  379. the cartridge port.
  380.  
  381. Now all that was needed was to work out which of the bits 1->15 did what,with
  382. a MV16 plugged in.To do this,I sat down with my trustly electronics/computer
  383. reference books,a ST and a disassembled MV16 and se about some reverse
  384. engineering!
  385.  
  386. And this is what I found.Firstly bits 1->4 ,of the address,denote what channel
  387. to use.And secondly the bits 5->12,of the address,denote the volume data to
  388. play on that channel.So an addresses bit pattern looks like this:

  409.         So if you`re thinking of producing some sort of sample playing program,
  410. either commercial or PD,please include support for the MV16 sound cartridge!!!

  412. NOTE:- To test if the cartridge is present,play a note of zero volume and if you
  413. can a none zero value back then it's there,I think...
  414.  
  415. NOTE:- These are only provisional outcomings and are not guaranteed to be
  416.        perhaps after the summer,if there are any correction needed then a newer

  491. Please excuse me for such.  The following says absolutely *nothing*
  492. about the capacity of the programs to extract or create LHARC archive
  493. files.

  495. I collected as many versions of lharc as I could find on the net.  I
  496. tested them on orbit.lzh (at atari.archive) as well as a lharcsrc.lzh
  497. that Bammi had passed to me.  Orbit.lzh starts with an uncompressed
  498. member file hiscore.orb, which seems to be troublesome.  I would very
  499. much appreciate to hear if others have succeeded testing these files
  500. where I have failed!
  501.  
  502. The testing was conducted on a Mega 4 ST under TOS 1.2 with a 1 Mb RAM
  503. disk.  The *.lzh files were on the RAM disk and the test was performed
  504. under Gulam with the archive programs under test on drive A:\

  577. RTS/CTS working right on STs?  I remember vaguely from the README that
  578. it was NOT 1.4 specific.  Does anyone know any more about this?

  595.         I have just uploaded xcontrol.lzh, the new Atari replacement
  596. for control.acc.  I belive that it replaces chmelion.acc completely.

  598.         I have recovered it from the public "Atari Magazine" BBS (run
  599. by Atari France).  It was a self-extracting version.  Atari Magazine
  600. claimed that it would work on plain STs and STes.  I am here to state
  601. that it does work on both.  I have also included maccel3.prg and a few
  602. MegaSTe *.cpx files since they also work on STs and STes (depending
  603. upon the capacity of the machine).

  605.         In the case that Atari does not want their release, they are
  606. all dated "Dec 12 1990" so that atari.archive can delete them.

  626. default Cookie Jar for those poor STs that don't have one (i.e., TOS < 1.6).
